Join our Whatsapp channel New Delhi [India], September 29 (ANI): AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday criticised the Delhi government over concerns surrounding women’s safety following the alleged gangrape of a 17-year-old girl at Aastha Kunj Park, saying restrictions on women students are not a solution.In a self-made video, Kejriwal said that after the case, Delhi’s female students have been extremely agitated, highlighting the protests by female students.“And the government poured salt on their wounds when it announced the start of online classes, and after starting online classes it says: stop going out of the house in the evening, stop going out of the house at night. Why are all the restrictions imposed only on girls?” he said.Targeting the BJP government, he said, “The government is incompetent and failed in doing its job, so will you put restrictions on women?”Kejriwal called for CCTV surveillance across Delhi, functional streetlights and deployment of women police personnel inside colleges, while urging the government to ensure that women can move freely and safely.“The government should provide safety. The government should install CCTV cameras. Delhi is the capital of the country—can’t you provide security inside Delhi? Connect the whole of Delhi with a network of CCTV cameras and monitor it on a real-time basis. Create a central command structure and monitor in real time. If you start monitoring and install street lights in dark spots everywhere, then you will see that all women will start feeling safe,” he said.The AAP Chief also claimed that when his government was in power in the national capital, they had installed 2.62 lakh CCTV cameras and got 2.80 lakh street lights installed.“Today, more than half of them are not working. They should be made functional. Two security police officers, women police officers, should be provided inside every college. And the most important thing is that if someone commits rape or harasses a girl, he immediately joins their party, and this entire administration gets busy protecting the rapist. What message goes out? The message that goes out is that anyone who harasses girls will join their party and nothing will happen to him,” he said.“And the second thing: stop lecturing women. “Don’t go out of the house after 7 o’clock,” “do this,” “do that.” They are also free citizens of this country. They also have fundamental rights. They are also human beings. They also have the right to live; they also have the right to freedom. They should get complete freedom, and it is the government’s responsibility to give them complete security,” Kejriwal said.This came amid a series of protests by Delhi University students over women’s safety following the alleged gangrape of a 17-year-old girl at Aastha Kunj Park in south Delhi earlier this month.The first major demonstration was held on September 23, when around 200 students from Delhi University and affiliated institutions, including Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Miranda House, Gargi College and Dr BR Ambedkar University, took to the streets.The protests continued over the following days. On September 25, hundreds of women students marched near Delhi University’s South Campus, demanding safer public spaces and stronger action against sexual harassment. The protesters were later moved from Siri Fort Road to Arun Jaitley Park amid police deployment.On Monday, another demonstration was held at the Faculty of Arts, with hundreds of Delhi University students, primarily women and queer participants, taking part. It was reported as the third and largest demonstration in a week.The safety concerns gained further attention after Delhi Police registered an FIR following an allegation by two Delhi University students that they were followed and sexually harassed by men in an SUV near Hakikat Park in Mukherjee Nagar. Police said the accused allegedly made indecent remarks and fled after the women began recording the incident. (ANI)
