Mom-of-2 dragged to her death and eaten alive as neighbor stumbles on horror scene

Marina Velichko, 51, went outside her home in, just as the predator was stalking her pigs. The beast bludgeoned her to death and dragged her body away.

A neighbor later shot the giant bear near a landfill, according to local reports. Marina, who worked at the local school in Russia's Voznesenka, Krasnoyarsk region, had been grieving for her son Alexander, who was killed in Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine.

She is survived by her daughter, 13, and a foster son, 15. Marina is believed to be the 21st fatality due to bear attacks this summer in the worst year in living memory.

She is the seventh killed in Krasnoyarsk region. Two men narrowly escaped death in Buryatia region when they were searching for runaway calves.

Both were attacked but one managed to grab his rifle in time and shoot the beast. Earlier this week a 39-year-old night watchman was killed near Potapovo, Krasnoyarsk region.

And in Tuva region, ice hockey coach Alexander Kuzmenko, 62, died after his face was ripped apart by a raging bear when he was on a fishing trip. He was the father of NHL star Andrei Kuzmenko, 30, a Pittsburgh Penguins forward.

Officials blamed the tourist group for venturing into the remote region despite a ban on fishing due to the presence of dangerous bears. Elsewhere, the town of Abaza, Khakassia region, with a population of 15,000, is under siege despite dozens of bears being shot dead in the vicinity.

Mayor Valentina Filimonova warned that predators had taken over the cemetery and several districts.

In another shock case, mother-of-eight Lyudmila Prokofievna, 66, was pulled by a bear through the window of her bedroom and ravaged to death in Verkhniy Kebezh village, Krasnoyarsk region.

Last month tragic bride-to-be Snezhana Korolyova, 29, was hauled from the tent she shared with her boyfriend by a raging brown bear and killed.

At Cape Simau on Sakhalin, Russia's largest island, dramatic footage this week showed a holidaymaker marooned on his vehicle's roof while two bear cubs rummaged through a campsite and tore apart a tent.

Forest fires and a poor cedar-nut harvest are among the factors driving hungry animals towards settlements.

The number of wild bears in Russia has spiraled from about 130,000 in 1990 to almost 308,000 today, and there are signs of their spread westward towards Moscow.

Political analyst Sergei Markov, a former politician, warned: "There seems to be some kind of bear uprising in Russia.

"There have been many cases of bears attacking people across Siberia. In many regions, the authorities are mobilizing hunters to shoot the bears. There are not enough hunters.

"Soon, there will probably have to be a mobilization of hunters from European Russia to travel to Siberia and take part in defending settlements from bear attacks.

"In many regions, mass outdoor events in forests or on the edges of forests have been canceled.

"The reasons for this mass bear uprising are unclear. What do the bears in Russia want?"
