Trump’s Govt Finally Speaks About Ruto’s Re-election Bid, Sparking A Heated Political Earthquake

The United States has declared that it will not back President William Ruto or any opposition candidate in Kenya’s 2027 General Election, with Washington instead placing emphasis on stability and a peaceful electoral process.

Henry Wooster, President Donald Trump’s nominee to become the next US ambassador to Kenya, made the remarks during his vetting before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Wooster said Washington would remain neutral and would not choose between competing political parties or presidential candidates.

According to Wooster, the United States’ main concern as Kenya approaches the August 2027 election will be maintaining stability and preventing political violence.

“Our watchword for August 2027 is stability,” Wooster told senators, adding that the United States was “not picking sides” in the election.

He said Washington would closely monitor developments surrounding the polls while focusing on a peaceful political environment rather than determining which candidate or party should emerge victorious.

The position comes as Kenya’s political activity intensifies, with President Ruto and various opposition leaders building their national networks ahead of the election. Political leaders have also increasingly engaged Kenyans living abroad as they seek to strengthen their support bases.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for Citizens Party, has recently been meeting Kenyans in the United States. Ruto has also interacted with Kenyans in the diaspora during his recent visit to the US for the United Nations General Assembly.

Wooster’s comments come amid concerns over political tensions and incidents of violence at some political gatherings in Kenya. His emphasis on stability signals that Washington intends to prioritize the peaceful conduct of the electoral process.

If confirmed by the Senate, Wooster would succeed Meg Whitman, who left her position as US ambassador to Kenya in 2024. His nomination was submitted by Trump in June 2026.

Beyond the elections, Wooster has described Kenya as an important US partner and said he would seek to strengthen cooperation in security, trade and investment.
