Trump Govt Breaks Silence on Ruto’s 2027 Re-Election Bid, Declares Its Stand

The Trump administration has announced that it will not support President William Ruto’s re-election campaign or any opposition candidates leading up to Kenya’s 2027 General Election.

This stance was articulated by Henry Wooster, President Trump’s nominee for U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, during his appearance before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee on September 24. Wooster stated that the U.S. would maintain a neutral position and not take sides in the presidential election in Kenya.

He emphasized that Washington’s focus leading up to the August 2027 election would be on ensuring stability and a peaceful political process, rather than influencing the outcome in favor of any candidate or party.

“Our guiding principle for the August 2027 elections is stability,” Wooster said, reinforcing that this aligns with U.S. foreign policy priorities. “What we are looking for is stability,” he reiterated.

Wooster’s comments come as political factions in Kenya ramp up their preparations for the upcoming election, with both the ruling party and the opposition striving to strengthen their support base nationwide.

In addition, several political figures have been actively engaging with Kenyans living abroad to garner support for the elections. For example, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been meeting with members of the Kenyan diaspora in the U.S., and President Ruto interacted with Kenyans there during his visit for the United Nations General Assembly.

Trump nominated Wooster to be the next U.S. ambassador to Kenya in June 2026, following the departure of former ambassador Meg Whitman in 2024.
