Kalonzo Announces Change of Plans, Vows to Go for Presidency Himself to Fulfil His Mother’s Dream

Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has renewed his determination to pursue Kenya’s presidency, reflecting on the two-decade political journey since the death of his mother, Mama Sarah Malia Musyoka.

Kalonzo made the remarks during a family commemoration at their home in Tseikuru, Kitui County, marking 20 years since his mother’s death. He used the occasion to remember her and connect her memory to his long-standing ambition to become Kenya’s president.

“My mother died knowing that her son was running for the presidency. Mama, it has taken me 20 years, but we are nearly there,” Kalonzo said.

The statement underlined the personal significance he attaches to his presidential ambitions, which have remained a major part of his political career for many years.

Kalonzo first sought the presidency in the 2007 General Election. He later became Raila Odinga’s running mate in the 2013 and 2017 presidential elections. In August 2026, he again publicly declared his intention to seek the presidency in the 2027 General Election.

His latest remarks come as Kenya’s political parties and leaders intensify preparations for the 2027 polls. Kalonzo has continued making public appearances across the country while Wiper Patriotic Front promotes his political agenda and presidential ambitions.

In August, Kalonzo said he intended to be on the presidential ballot in 2027 and outlined a 13-point programme covering issues including healthcare, education, employment, food security, taxation, devolution, youth empowerment and social protection.

He has also taken a firm position on his relationship with President William Ruto, saying in recent public remarks that he would not enter a political power-sharing arrangement with the President and that the next major political engagement would be through the ballot.

The commemoration of his mother therefore carried both family and political significance for Kalonzo. By recalling what she knew about his ambitions before her death, he presented his presidential pursuit as a journey that has continued through successive elections, political alliances and changes in Kenya’s political landscape.

As the 2027 General Election approaches, Kalonzo continues to position himself as a presidential contender. His statement that he is “nearly there” was his own description of how far he believes the journey has progressed, while the final shape of the presidential contest will depend on candidates, parties, alliances and the choices Kenyan voters make.
