UK, Netherlands and Denmark ready to work with Ghana on reparations
In New York, United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Denmark expressed their readiness to work with Ghana to advance reparatory justice. This was stated by Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa during a high-level event on next steps, MyJoyOnline reports.
Position of European countries
According to Ablakwa, these countries approached Ghana after the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution recognizing the transatlantic trade and enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity.
The minister also said that Ghana received similar signals from Portugal following a bilateral meeting with that country’s foreign minister. He noted that the willingness of European states to join the discussion demonstrates that Ghana’s initiative is not intended to divide the international community.

The event in New York was hosted by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama and co-organized by Ghana, Germany and France. Ablakwa acknowledged that discussions on reparatory justice would be difficult and emotional, but stressed the need for open dialogue and reconciliation.
UN resolution
On March 25, 2026, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution initiated by Ghana. It is aimed at advancing reparatory justice, reconciliation and overcoming the lasting consequences of slavery and racial discrimination.
According to MyJoyOnline, Mahama, as the African Union’s reparations envoy, is leading Ghana’s efforts to turn the resolution’s provisions into concrete action through international dialogue and cooperation.
