Thirty-five police officers have been promoted by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, for their outstanding role in the arrest of suspects linked to the Adabraka gold robbery in Accra.

The promotions were carried out on January 15, 2026, in recognition of the officers’ exceptional professionalism, dedication and teamwork during operations that led to the arrest of suspects involved in the high-profile daylight robbery at a jewellery shop in Adabraka in November 2024.

IGP Yohuno, together with members of the Police Management Board (POMAB), congratulated the officers and urged them to see their elevation as a call to higher responsibility, leadership and accountability.

He further charged the promoted officers to continue working hard and to uphold the standards of professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

“The promotions are in recognition of their outstanding role in the arrest of suspects involved in the Adabraka gold robbery,” the Ghana Police Service said in a statement.

The Police Service also reiterated its commitment to recognising merit and rewarding excellence as a way of strengthening professionalism, boosting morale and enhancing effective policing across the country.

Background

The Adabraka gold robbery occurred in November 2024 when a group of armed men stormed the area in broad daylight and attacked a jewellery shop.

Viral videos from the scene showed at least five heavily built men wielding various firearms and firing shots into the air as they loaded stolen items, including bags believed to contain money, into a silver vehicle.

Witnesses said the robbers ordered a bystander who had raised his hands in surrender to comply with their demands. At one point, the suspects were seen scattering some of the money they had seized while continuing to fire warning shots.

After loading the stolen items, the robbers sped off while firing additional shots into the air.

The incident left at least one person injured after being hit by gunfire from the suspected robbers. Another video showed residents rushing the injured man to the hospital for treatment.

Police investigations into the case have since led to the arrest of three suspects, with the promoted officers playing key roles in the operations that resulted in the arrests.
