Mahama, Turn GN Bank Into the Women’s Bank Ghana Was Promised

Years ago, a visionary businessman and former Convention People’s Party (CPP) Member of Parliament — who even served as a minister under President John Agyekum Kufuor’s administration — set out to achieve what no political party has matched to this day: establishing a bank in every district of Ghana.

His name is Papa Kwesi Nduom. Beyond politics, he built football clubs, hotels, media houses, and numerous businesses that created employment for thousands of Ghanaian youth. His dream of accessible banking for all materialised through GN Bank, a network that stretched across the length and breadth of the country.

Sadly, this dream was cut short when GN Bank was collapsed under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government led by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo‑Addo.

GN Bank was not just a business. It was a bold, well‑structured national development idea — banking at the doorstep of every Ghanaian, from the biggest cities to the smallest communities. That noble vision was halted.

Then came a new promise: His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, now President of the Republic of Ghana, assured Ghanaians during his campaign that he would establish a Women’s Bank to support women’s economic empowerment.

Two years into the administration, however, very little has been heard about this important promise.

Mr. President, respectfully, the unresolved matter concerning Papa Kwesi Nduom and GN Bank poses a significant risk of judgment debt to the nation if not properly addressed. Many Ghanaians expected decisive action on the collapsed banks under the previous government, yet not much has been communicated or initiated.

Meanwhile, GN Bank’s physical infrastructure — branches across all districts and regions — still exists. Why can’t the current government negotiate with Dr. Nduom to repurpose these branches into the Women’s Bank you promised? This would be a cost‑effective, strategic, and nationally beneficial solution that avoids potential judgment debt while fulfilling a major campaign commitment.

Mr. President, I have said my piece. A word to the wise is enough.

Your humble citizen vigilante,
Dennis Narterh Adzigodi
