Oyo State Fire Services Agency (OYSFA)

Two lock-up shops have been razed by fire at the Bola Ige International Market, New Gbagi, Ibadan, with no casualty recorded in the incident.

The fire, which occurred at 348 ZI/E Milo Zone of the market, was reported to the Oyo State Fire Services Agency at about 12:25 p.m. on Monday.

The agency said its officers, led by an Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent, ACFS Adeniyi, promptly responded to the scene.

On arrival, the firefighters discovered that two out of a row of nine lock-up shops had been engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing from the affected shops.

The fire crew immediately commenced firefighting operations and successfully prevented the flames from spreading to the remaining seven shops and nearby properties.

The agency said no casualty was recorded, while a post-fire investigation had commenced to determine the cause of the outbreak.

After the fire was brought under control, the officer in charge delivered a brief fire safety lecture to traders, occupants and sympathisers at the scene.

The fire appliance returned safely to the station at about 1:41 p.m. and was placed on standby.

The Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman, Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Dr Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged members of the public to remain vigilant and fire-conscious.

Akinwande particularly urged traders to install fire extinguishers in their shops and observe basic fire safety precautions.

The agency also appealed to members of the public to report fire incidents promptly and provide accurate addresses to facilitate quick response by firefighters.
