Ghana Opposition Boycotts Parliament Over ‘Weaponized’ Arrests

Ghana’s political landscape is fracturing under the weight of escalating partisan hostilities, as Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin launched a blistering attack on the ruling National Democratic Congress government, accusing it of weaponizing state institutions to silence opposition voices. The New Patriotic Party lawmaker alleged that the administration is deliberately arresting NPP officials to divert public attention from what he described as a catastrophic mismanagement of the national economy.

Arrests Spark Democratic Backlash

The controversy centers on the recent detention and interrogation of several high-profile NPP figures, including Kwame Baffoe Abronye, widely known as Chairman Abronye, and Baba Amando. Both officials were subsequently granted bail by the Criminal Investigations Department, but their arrests triggered a boycott of parliamentary proceedings by the NPP minority caucus. Afenyo-Markin framed the detentions as a calculated intimidation tactic designed to cripple the opposition’s ability to hold the executive branch accountable.

Speaking to the press in Accra, the Minority Leader warned that Ghana’s hard-won democratic credentials are under severe threat. He invoked the dangerous precedent of ‘you do me, I do you’ politics, urging the political class to abandon the entrenched cycle of retributive justice that has plagued previous transitions of power. The Office of the Special Prosecutor has ramped up its anti-corruption drive, but critics argue that the timing and targets of these investigations reveal a deeply partisan agenda aimed at neutralizing the NPP ahead of future electoral contests.

Economic Anxiety Fuels Political Tension

The political theater unfolding in Parliament is inextricably linked to Ghana’s fragile macroeconomic environment. Despite recent interventions by the International Monetary Fund, ordinary Ghanaians continue to grapple with high inflation, currency volatility, and a crushing cost of living. Afenyo-Markin argued that the government’s pivot toward aggressive law enforcement against opposition figures is a transparent attempt to manufacture a crisis narrative, thereby shifting the media focus away from the harsh economic realities facing households across the country.

For policy analysts and investors monitoring West Africa, Ghana’s political stability has long been considered a cornerstone of regional security. The Economic Community of West African States relies on Accra as a diplomatic hub, and any erosion of democratic norms in Ghana sends shockwaves through a region already reeling from military coups in neighboring Sahelian nations. The Nigerian diplomatic corps and regional risk analysts are closely watching the standoff, as political instability in Ghana could disrupt cross-border trade and deter foreign direct investment across the ECOWAS bloc.

The Road to 2028 and Institutional Trust

As Ghana looks toward its next general election, the current standoff raises profound questions about the independence of state institutions, including the judiciary and the police service. Civil society organizations, including the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers, have called for immediate dialogue between the ruling party and the opposition to de-escalate tensions. They warn that the normalization of political arrests will inevitably lead to public disillusionment and potentially spark unrest among the youth demographics already frustrated by economic stagnation.

Afenyo-Markin has vowed that the NPP will not be cowed by state intimidation, signaling a protracted and bitter legislative battle in the coming months. The international community, including the European Union and the United States Embassy in Accra, has privately expressed concern over the rising political temperature. If the government fails to demonstrate impartial application of the law, Ghana risks losing its reputation as the beacon of democracy in West Africa, a title that has historically attracted significant development aid and preferential trade agreements.
