Health Minister cautions Boards against interfering in day-to-day running of institutions

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has called for a clear separation between the responsibilities of governing boards and management in Ghana’s health institutions.

He said boards and their members should focus on governance and oversight rather than becoming involved in the day-to-day administration of institutions.

“The day-to-day running of the institution is not the responsibility of the Board or Board members,” Mr Akandoh said.

The Minister made the remarks during the second day of the Ministry of Health’s High-Level Mid-Year Review Retreat in Ho, where participants were undergoing training on corporate governance and the roles of institutional boards.

He said effective governance was essential to ensuring that public resources were properly managed and ultimately used to improve healthcare delivery and the well-being of Ghanaians.

Mr Akandoh also stressed the importance of clearly defining the respective responsibilities of boards and Chief Executive Officers to prevent interference in institutional administration and promote effective management.

He disclosed his commitment to ensuring that health agencies have the appropriate Legislative Instruments (LIs) to strengthen governance and provide clear frameworks for the operation of their institutions.

The Minister further urged health institutions to exercise greater prudence in the use of public funds, particularly when organising seminars, training programmes and official travels.

He said spending decisions must take into account the country’s current resource constraints and demonstrate value for money.

According to Mr Akandoh, the governance training is intended to equip participants with a better understanding of their responsibilities, help prevent institutional infractions and promote accountability in the management of health institutions.

He encouraged participants to actively engage in the training and use the knowledge gained to improve governance and decision-making within their respective institutions.
