Experts at Climate Talks 2026 in Bolgatanga have called for an integrated approach to address the growing security and livelihood challenges linked to climate-driven migration in Ghana’s Upper East Region.

The dialogue, organised by the German Embassy in Accra under the theme, “Climate-Driven Migration and Its Impacts in Ghana’s Upper East Region,” brought together representatives from the Ghana Immigration Service, UN Refugee Agency and local communities.

German Ambassador to Ghana, Frederik Landshoeft, said climate change, environmental degradation and recurring droughts were putting increasing pressure on livelihoods across the Sahel and contributing to migration.

“These environmental challenges often interact with conflict, economic hardship, and political instability, prompting many people to seek safety and opportunities elsewhere,” he said.

He stressed the need to balance humanitarian protection, sustainable development and regional security, noting that migrants and refugees could contribute to host communities when supported by appropriate policies and social inclusion.

Participants also called for stronger community resilience, improved management of land and water resources, and targeted economic opportunities for women and young people to reduce vulnerability and prevent conflict.

Ambassador Landshoeft said Germany remained committed to supporting peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and sustainable development in Ghana.

“Resilience starts with knowledge, grows through communication, and succeeds through coordination,” he said.
