A Ghanaian evacuee from South Africa has died shortly after arriving at the Accra International Airport as part of the government’s ongoing evacuation exercise following xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the deceased was pronounced dead at the Emergency Medical Reception at the airport at 6:55 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026.

The deceased was among 50 Ghanaians who arrived in the country at 5:50 p.m. aboard an Air Tanzania flight from South Africa.

According to the Ministry, reports from fellow passengers indicated that the deceased’s health condition began to deteriorate about 30 minutes before the flight touched down in Accra.

“The deceased’s health condition began to deteriorate about 30 minutes before touching down in Accra,” the Ministry said.

A medical emergency team stationed at the airport attended to the passenger upon arrival and made efforts to save his life.

“The medical emergency team that was on standby at the airport to receive him attended to him upon arrival,” the Ministry said.

However, the attempts were unsuccessful, and doctors subsequently confirmed the death at 6:55 p.m.

“Regrettably, the deceased passed away and was confirmed dead by doctors at 6:55 pm after all attempts failed,” the Ministry stated.

The Ministry said it was undertaking the necessary formalities to inform the deceased’s family.

It added that the remains had been deposited at the Police Hospital for an autopsy.

“The Ministry is undertaking the formalities of informing the family of the deceased and has arranged for the deposit of the remains at the Police Hospital for autopsy,” it said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it would provide further updates following formal engagement with the bereaved family.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will provide an update on this sad development after formal engagement with the bereaved family,” it added.
