The Accra Onion Sellers and Importers Cooperative Society, together with the Cross Border Women Traders Association, has commended the Minister For Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, for her swift intervention in resolving the recent trade dispute between Ghana and Nigeria’s onion traders.

The commendation follows the lifting of the suspension placed on onion exports to Ghana by the National Onion Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria, a move that has restored the flow of onion supplies between the two neighbouring countries.

The cooperative society, which comprises five major onion sellers’ associations, including the Accra and Adjei Kotoku groups as well as the Dominanse Association in the Central Region, praised the Minister and her officials for their timely engagement with stakeholders to address the concerns affecting traders on both sides.

At a meeting held in Accra on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, involving representatives from Ghana and Nigeria, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, called for an immediate end to the dispute, emphasising the importance of strengthening trade relations between the two countries and promoting economic cooperation within the ECOWAS sub-region.

The minister appealed to all stakeholders to put their differences aside and work together to create a more stable and mutually beneficial trading environment.

She cautioned that a prolonged disruption in onion trade could negatively affect farmers, traders, transport operators and consumers in both Ghana and Nigeria.

Following the intervention, all four Ghanaian trucks transporting onions from Nigeria to Ghana have been released as of Thursday, August 13, 2026, according to the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Onion Sellers and Importers Cooperative Society Mr. Osman Mohammed.

The society also confirmed that all Nigerian trucks carrying onions that had arrived in Ghana have completed offloading their produce at various markets across the country.

The traders expressed confidence that the minister’s intervention would pave the way for a lasting solution and stronger collaboration between Ghanaian and Nigerian traders, while contributing to the growth of agricultural trade within the ECOWAS region.
