Former Vice President of Ghana and NPP presidential candidate Mahamudu Bawumia said during a meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association that these professionals are indispensable to the country’s healthcare system. The meeting took place on September 3, 2026, in Accra, MyJoyOnline reports.

According to Bawumia, the discussion was intended to hear the experiences, challenges and policy proposals of healthcare workers who work directly within the healthcare system. He described the meeting as productive and informative.
Bawumia told the association’s leadership that the healthcare system cannot exist without nurses and midwives. He also called them the first point of contact between patients and the medical system, the last line of defence and the foundation of healthcare delivery in Ghana.

Education and working conditions
Association representatives raised issues concerning the development of nursing education and continuing professional training, closing infrastructure gaps in medical facilities, as well as strengthening leadership and management in the sector. They also called for long-term solutions to the problem of recurring industrial actions.
The proposals included sustainable measures to improve the welfare, motivation and working conditions of nurses and midwives. In particular, association representatives spoke about clear career advancement opportunities, improved terms of service and better recognition of their work.
Bawumia noted that the practical proposals of professionals who work in the system every day would be important to his approach to healthcare policy. The meeting was part of consultations with professional associations, youth groups, business representatives and civil society that he is holding ahead of the 2028 elections.
