Political science lecturer Dr Kwame Asah-Asante has criticised what he describes as growing hypocrisy within Ghana’s political space.

The University of Ghana lecturer said politicians often defend actions when their party is in power, only to condemn the same behaviour when another government takes over.

“We have seen hypocrisy in Ghanaian politics for a very long time,” he said on JoyNews.

According to him, many political actors change their positions depending on whether they are in government or opposition.

“People do things in one regime, then another regime comes, and they condemn the same things,” he explained.

Dr Asah-Asante said this pattern continues to weaken public trust in politics and distracts attention from the real issues affecting democracy.

He also rejected attempts by some people to justify wrongdoing by comparing it to actions taken under previous governments.

“Equalisation will not help anybody,” he stressed.

The lecturer argued that even a single bad political action can undermine the country’s democratic system.

He warned that dangerous speech and reckless political behaviour could eventually create instability if left unchecked.
