Accra, May 19, GNA- Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection has urged the media to lead efforts in promoting public understanding and implementation of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024 (Act 1121).
She said advancing gender equality required accurate and consistent coverage of the Act to ensure its effective implementation.
Dr Lartey gave the advice during the Ministry’s engagement with the media on the implementation of the Affirmative Action Act, aimed at strengthening collaboration and deepening public awareness.
She described the media as “a pillar of democratic governance that shapes public opinion and holds institutions accountable.”
“When you report accurately and consistently on gender equality issues, you do more than inform, you build consensus, challenge discrimination, and help create the cultural conditions necessary for lasting change,” she said.
Dr Lartey said the Act reflected government’s commitment to fairness, equal opportunities and the full participation of women in decision-making and development processes across all sectors.
The Act, she explained, established clear and legally binding measures to address gender disparities in the political, economic, educational and social spheres, while promoting gender-responsive policies and accountability.
Dr Lartey emphasised that successful implementation of the Act would require broad public awareness, stakeholder collaboration and sustained national commitment.
She encouraged the media to actively engage in informing the public, challenging harmful norms and amplifying the voices of women and girls.
Dr Lartey stressed that sustained, year-round coverage was imperative to promote accountability and track progress.
She expressed confidence that with informed and committed media partners, the Act would move beyond statute books to drive real gender transformation in both public and private institutions.
“That is to ensure the Act is fully realised not just in policy, but in the lived experiences of Ghanaians,” she said.
Mr Ebenezer Charway, speaking on behalf of Dr Marian W. A. Kpakpah, Director of Administration at the Ministry, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to sustained engagement with the media in advancing implementation of the Act.
He commended the media for their role in promoting informed public discourse and education on national issues.
