Alfred Thompson, a National Treasurer hopeful for the New Patriotic Party, has alleged that some teachers in Ghana have gone unpaid for up to 14 months under the current National Democratic Congress government.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana discussion on Tuesday, Thompson described the situation as a glaring failure in public financial management and social service delivery.
“Imagine a young person getting employed and having no money to support themselves,” Thompson said, emphasising that leaving teachers, key pillars of the education system, without pay for such long periods is unacceptable and shows a lack of respect for public sector workers.
Thompson called on the government to urgently clear the arrears, ensure salaries are paid on time, and provide clear explanations to both affected teachers and the public.
He also pointed to the previous NPP administration, highlighting that under their governance, salaries were paid promptly and more jobs were created, suggesting a contrast in financial management and accountability.
Linking the issue to broader concerns about transparency and fiscal responsibility, Thompson urged the NDC government to prioritize the welfare of frontline workers in its budget and planning processes.
