The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to pursuing justice in the murder case of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale, nearly eight years after the tragic incident shocked the nation.

Ahmed Hussein-Suale, a key member of the Tiger Eye Private Investigations (PI) team and an associate of renowned investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, was shot and killed in 2019 while carrying out his professional duties.

His death sparked widespread outrage locally and internationally, raising serious concerns about the safety of journalists and press freedom in Ghana.

Speaking on a Bolgatanga-based radio station, Dr Ayine acknowledged the challenges surrounding the case but stressed that it has not been abandoned by the state.

“We have not abandoned the case, all right, but you know when a case has gone cold, it is very difficult to go back and retrieve evidence,” he stated.

He explained that the passage of time and gaps in the initial investigations have made the process more complex.

According to the Attorney General, efforts are still ongoing to review available information and determine whether sufficient evidence can be gathered to hold perpetrators accountable.

“We are still trying to see if we can gather sufficient evidence to be able to hold someone accountable,” he added, describing the situation as a difficult but necessary pursuit of justice.

The case has long been described as “cold,” with no successful prosecutions since the killing, a reality that has continued to frustrate the family of the late journalist, civil society organisations, and media freedom advocates.

Dr Ayine’s comments come at a time when calls are growing for renewed political will and institutional reforms to protect journalists and ensure accountability for crimes committed against media practitioners.
