I Did Not Say Yoruba People Started Nollywood,I Said They Started This Filmmaking -Actor Nkem Owoh

Speaking In an interview on Curiosity Made Me Ask podcast with Isbae U, veteran actor Nkem Owoh, popularly known as Osuofia, clarified his position on the origins of Nollywood

Owoh explained that he never claimed Yoruba people started Nollywood. He stated that Yoruba filmmakers were already making movies and selling them on video cassettes before Nollywood was created

Owoh stated that when he and other filmmakers began working together to develop the Nigerian movie industry, Nollywood did not yet exist as a name. He added that they later came together, exchanged ideas and agreed on the name Nollywood.

In Owoh’s words: “You have given me this wrong accusation that I said Yoruba people started Nollywood, no. Yoruba people started this filmmaking. When did Nollywood come out? When we started the thing there was no Nollywood as a name. We sat together and we exchanged ideas on how the thing is going to come into fruition and eventually we chose Nollywood”
