Adeboye Ordered Refund of Billions in Illicit Church Donations, Says EFCC Boss

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, revealed that Pastor Enoch Adeboye ordered the prompt return of billions of naira donated to a church project after funds were traced to financial crimes.

According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Saturday, November 7, 2026, while addressing workers of the Redeemed Christian Church of God during an early morning gathering, Olukoyede stated that Adeboye directed the refund within twenty-four hours of notification.

The anti-graft chief explained that an unnamed church member had made massive financial contributions toward an ongoing church project, but subsequent forensic investigations later established that the money was entirely generated from illegal financial activities.

Addressing church members ahead of their upcoming annual Holy Ghost Congress, Olukoyede commended the general overseer for taking immediate decisive action to return the money once the commission alerted leadership to its illicit source.

The commission chairman expressed deep concern over the increasing involvement of religious leaders in financial misconduct, cautioning church workers against accepting suspicious monetary contributions or pursuing wealth through questionable methods during church activities.

He also recounted a separate incident where another unnamed religious institution involved in a Ponzi scheme refunded substantial funds after resisting initial intervention, stressing that the agency would prosecute offenders regardless of their status.

Responding to the security chief’s address, Pastor Adeboye declared that the church would never shield anyone involved in financial wrongdoing, urging all pastors to maintain transparent accounting practices and thoroughly verify sources before accepting donations.
