Javits Frimpong’s death: Kpebu identifies gun lobby as obstacle to US gun control

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has described the powerful gun lobby in the United States as a major obstacle to efforts to address persistent gun violence following the death of Ghanaian Javits Frimpong.

He said the financial influence of gun rights advocates makes it difficult for the US government to introduce sweeping restrictions on firearms, despite the recurring deaths associated with gun violence.

Speaking about the issue, Mr Kpebu pointed to the influence of the gun lobby and its support for political candidates as factors that complicate attempts to impose an outright ban on guns.

“The gun lobby is very, very powerful. Their R&D, etc., they have a lot of money, so they always sponsor their candidates here and there,” he said on Keypoints on TV3.

According to him, the financial backing provided to political candidates makes it extremely difficult to achieve a situation where there is an outright ban on guns in the United States.

He noted that the debate over gun ownership is also complicated by the Second Amendment, which guarantees Americans the right to bear arms.

Mr Kpebu said advocates of gun ownership often argue that firearms themselves do not kill people, but rather individuals who pull the trigger.

“They will tell you that gangs don’t kill people, it’s a human being that pulls the trigger,” he remarked.

He acknowledged that the issue involves several competing arguments, including the size and population of the United States, which some proponents consider comparable to a continent.

However, he maintained that the influence of the gun lobby remains a significant challenge in efforts to make American society safer.
