How did you pay $750,000? Janet Nabla confronts Ablakwa over charter flight cost

How did you pay $750,000? Janet Nabla confronts Ablakwa over charter flight cost

Former People’s National Party presidential candidate Janet Asana Nabla has questioned the reported $750,000 cost of one of the charter flights used in Ghana’s evacuation operation in South Africa, arguing that the amount requires a proper explanation.

She raised the concern during a panel discussion on Joy Prime while discussing the controversy surrounding Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa’s handling of the evacuation.

Nabla referred to three flights the minister reportedly said were arranged on May 29, June 6 and June 7, questioning the amount allegedly spent on one of them.

According to her, Ablakwa stated that one flight was chartered for $750,000.

She questioned the figure, claiming that charter flights between Ghana and South Africa typically cost between GHC150,000 and GHC300,000.

“Let’s go into the three flights he claimed came on the 29th of May, on the 6th of June and 7th of June. He said one flight, he chartered it for $750,000,” she said on Joy Prime.

Nabla argued that the reported amount was significantly higher than the prices she believed were charged for similar flights and demanded an explanation of how the cost was determined.

“Meanwhile, the flights from Ghana to South Africa, there is no flight from Ghana to South Africa that you can pick for GHC750,000. It’s between GHC150,000 to GHC300,000”, she stated.

She further questioned why such a large amount would be spent on the evacuation without a detailed account of the expenses.

Nabla said the reported cost was among the issues that had made her question the transparency of the operation and called for the figures to be properly explained.
