Victor Smith Discloses Number Of Ghanaians Killed In US Since Taking Office

Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith, has disclosed that five Ghanaians have died under different circumstances since he assumed his diplomatic position, with most of the cases involving gun violence.

The ambassador made the revelation during an interview on TV3’s The Key Points on Saturday, November 7, 2026, as concerns continue to grow over the recent deaths of two Ghanaians in the Bronx, New York.

According to Smith, the number of deaths recorded during his time in office has become a source of concern for Ghana’s diplomatic mission. He said the Embassy had already communicated its dissatisfaction with the developments and wanted the concerns of Ghanaians to be heard by the American authorities.

“In total, five people have died since I became the US Ambassador in different circumstances; most of them are gun-related,” he stated.

Smith, however, acknowledged that Ghana could not simply accuse the United States government of failing to act. He said the country had a responsibility to express its displeasure and seek attention to the safety of its citizens living in America.

The disclosure comes amid public attention surrounding the deaths of 15-year-old Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong and 24-year-old Joseph Owusu, both of whom died in the Bronx within the past week.

Javits was shot on October 29 while reportedly walking to school. The teenager, who had moved to the United States barely a year earlier to join his father, died at St Barnabas Hospital. New York police have been investigating possible motives, including robbery, mistaken identity and bullying. No suspect had been publicly identified in the information available at the time of the ambassador’s remarks.

Owusu, a Ghanaian caregiver who had reportedly been missing for about two weeks, was later found dead at a dumpsite. Surveillance footage reportedly showed individuals removing a large black bag containing his body from a vehicle before another person moved it away the following day. His brother, Kojo Yeboah, has publicly appealed for justice.

Smith’s revelation has added another dimension to the discussion about the safety of Ghanaians in the United States, particularly the concerns surrounding gun-related deaths and the need for stronger protection of citizens abroad.

The ambassador’s comments also reinforce calls for investigations into the recent cases to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
