How did you acquire Airport mansion on Ghc15,000 MP salary? Janet Nabla questions Ablakwa

Former presidential candidate of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Asana Nabla, has questioned how Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa acquired his Airport residential property, arguing that his earnings as a Member of Parliament should be examined against the cost of the house.

Speaking during a panel discussion on Joy Prime, Nabla said she became concerned about Ablakwa’s financial credibility after he appeared before Parliament’s Appointments Committee and could not, in her view, adequately explain how he acquired the property.

She said she subsequently petitioned President John Dramani Mahama against his appointment as Foreign Affairs Minister, insisting that his financial background raised questions about his suitability for the position.

Nabla claimed that Ablakwa had completed school without having worked in conventional employment before entering Parliament, where he earned a monthly salary of about Ghc15,000.

She questioned whether his parliamentary earnings could account for the property, particularly when the cost was considered.

“If someone who completed school, has never worked, became an MP, is taking 15,000 Ghana cedis as salary, and is living in a house that costs $10,000, these are not the people you should gather as ministers,” she said.

Nabla maintained that her concern was not simply whether an MP who had served for more than 10 years could afford to own a building, but whether Ablakwa could provide a clear account of how he acquired the property.

“Do you honestly think that a Member of Parliament can serve for more than 10 years and cannot afford a building? Do your calculation. He can’t,” she said.

She added that public officials should be prepared to explain their sources of wealth when questions are raised about their assets.
