Lagos to Commission Five CNG Stations in November

According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Friday November 6, 2026, the Lagos State Government plans to expand its compressed natural gas refuelling network to 19 stations by the first quarter of 2027, in a bid to improve access to alternative fuel and ease pressure on existing facilities.

The state also expects to commission five additional CNG stations in November 2026, taking the network beyond the three currently operating in Agege, Ojota and Oshodi. Its longer-term target is to establish 29 stations by the first quarter of 2028.

The Managing Director of Ibile Oil and Gas Corporation, Tayo Gbajumo, announced the plan during a media briefing on Thursday ahead of the 2026 Lagos Energy Summit, scheduled for November 10 to 12.

Gbajumo said the state government, through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, was working to extend CNG infrastructure across Lagos.

The expansion is intended to encourage motorists and transport operators to switch to the alternative fuel, while making refuelling more accessible in different parts of the state.

Regarding CNG, the ministry is working hard to develop infrastructure across the state. By Q1 2027, we will have 19 stations across the state. The idea is to continue expanding the network as we go further, he said.

The planned increase comes as the government looks to build a wider refuelling network to serve residents and commercial transport users.

With only three stations currently operating, additional facilities could provide more locations for drivers seeking CNG and potentially reduce reliance on a limited number of sites.

Gbajumo said five stations were expected to be commissioned by November 12. The announcement did not specify where the new facilities would be located or provide details on their capacity.

The state’s planned growth to 19 stations in the first quarter of 2027 would be followed by further development, with the government targeting 29 facilities by early 2028.

The timetable points to a phased expansion rather than a one-off increase, as the authorities seek to build the infrastructure needed to support broader use of CNG.

The announcement was reported by Nairametrics on Friday. It comes ahead of the Lagos Energy Summit, where energy issues and infrastructure are expected to feature in discussions.

CNG is promoted as an alternative fuel for vehicles, and expanding access to refuelling facilities is one way governments can support its uptake among private motorists and transport operators.
