Oburu Odinga’s Second Wife Defended After Kenyans Criticise Her Wedding Outfit
A photograph taken at a Tanzanian airstrip has sparked an online fashion debate after Kenyans spotted the outfit worn by Oburu Odinga’s second wife during Charlene Ruto’s wedding celebrations.
The image, captured as a delegation arrived in Mwanza ahead of the November 6 ceremony, showed several guests walking across the airstrip. However, attention quickly shifted to Oburu’s wife, who was dressed in a flowing pink and purple kaftan-style outfit.
She completed the look with black flat shoes, dark sunglasses and a colourful floral handbag. Her hair was styled in a braided updo.
The relaxed outfit stood out among other members of the delegation, some of whom had opted for suits and more structured formal wear.
Several social media users questioned whether the dress was suitable for an occasion attended by senior government officials and prominent personalities.
The phrase “fundi afutwe” became one of the reactions shared online, with critics suggesting that the outfit did not meet their expectations for such a high-profile wedding.
However, other Kenyans came to her defence, arguing that the kaftan was decent, comfortable and appropriate for the warm weather in Mwanza.
Some also criticised the harsh comments, saying women should be allowed to dress according to their comfort rather than face public ridicule.
The discussion unfolded against the backdrop of Charlene’s wedding to Isaya Yunge, which brought together President William Ruto, First Lady Rachel Ruto, Cabinet Secretaries, politicians and other dignitaries.
The couple exchanged vows in Mwanza on November 6, following their traditional Kalenjin Koito ceremony held on August 8 at the Ruto family’s Intonna Heritage Farm in Kilgoris.
While the wedding attracted attention because of its high-profile guest list, the airstrip photograph became an unexpected talking point online.
