Every Promise Kept – Mark Anderson Remembers Sundowns’ Early Days and Big Signings

Former Mamelodi Sundowns player Mark Anderson has revealed how a bold vision from Zola Mahomed helped lay the foundation for the club’s transformation into one of South Africa’s biggest football institutions.

Anderson, who witnessed the early stages of Sundowns’ development, recalled a significant meeting with Mahomed, during which the club’s ambitions were clearly outlined. According to the former player, Mahomed wanted to build a competitive team capable of challenging the dominance of Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

“He told me he was going to build a team around me so that we could rival them,” Anderson recalled.

The vision was ambitious, but Mahomed had already identified several players he wanted to bring to the club to strengthen the squad. His recruitment plans included Mike Mangena from Durban Bush Bucks, as well as Pitso Mosimane and William Zondi from Jomo Cosmos. Mike Ntombela, who was playing for Wits at the time, was also identified as an important addition.

For Anderson, the meeting also came with a personal assurance that demonstrated how serious the club was about securing his services. Mahomed promised him a signing-on fee, making it clear that Sundowns were prepared to invest in building a competitive squad.

What stood out most to Anderson was that Mahomed did not simply make promises to convince him to join the project. He followed through on everything he had outlined during their discussions.

“Everything he told me he was going to do, he did,” Anderson said. “All those players were bought, and the Sundowns story was on its way.”

Those early recruitment decisions represented an important chapter in Sundowns’ history, as the club began assembling the quality needed to compete with the established giants of South African football.

Although the journey towards becoming an African powerhouse would take many years, Mahomed’s vision and commitment helped establish the foundations of a project that would eventually produce a remarkable football legacy.
