Da Cruz explains why Mokwana is unlikely to feature in Carling Knockout Cup

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has indicated that new signing Elias Mokwana is unlikely to feature in the Carling Knockout Cup, explaining that the winger needs more time to regain match fitness and integrate into the squad.

Mokwana recently completed his move to Naturena, bringing valuable experience and international exposure to the Amakhosi squad. However, his arrival without the benefit of a pre-season programme has created a challenge for the technical team as they prepare for upcoming fixtures.

Da Cruz acknowledged the player’s quality and experience but stressed that rushing him into competitive action would not be the best approach. The coach wants to ensure that Mokwana is properly prepared before handing him regular opportunities.

Speaking about the winger’s situation, Da Cruz explained that the upcoming FIFA international break would provide an important opportunity to work on his integration into the team.

“Elias Mokwana is a very good player, an experienced player with international experience, he has a lot of quality \[but\] with no pre-season? It will be tough but in the upcoming FIFA break it will be the time to integrate him into the team, step by step.”

The comments suggest that Chiefs are taking a cautious approach towards the new signing, prioritising his physical preparation and adaptation rather than immediately placing him under competitive pressure.

For supporters who have been waiting to see Mokwana in action, the update means they may have to exercise patience before watching him make his contribution on the pitch.

His experience and attacking qualities could provide Chiefs with another option going forward, but Da Cruz appears determined to introduce him gradually.

The technical team will now use the available preparation period to help the winger understand the team’s playing structure and build the necessary fitness for competitive football.
