Ex-Sundowns Defender Phelelani Mpangase Backs Sibisi’s Omission from Bafana Squad

Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Phelelani Mpangase has backed the decision to leave Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi out of the latest Bafana Bafana squad, insisting that the national team’s selection should be based on current competition and the players best suited to the coach’s plans.

Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane announced his final 27-man squad on Thursday, November 5, for South Africa’s two 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Kenya.

Sibisi was among the notable players dropped from the preliminary squad, alongside experienced midfielder Themba Zwane and Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebohang Maboe.

The omission has attracted attention because Sibisi is the captain of Orlando Pirates and has been part of the national team setup. However, Mpangase believes the decision is understandable, particularly given the number of quality defenders currently available to Mosimane.

The former Sundowns defender’s position comes amid increased competition for places in Bafana’s defensive department, with players such as Olwethu Makhanya, Ime Okon, Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Samukele Kabini included in the final selection.

Mosimane has also indicated that his selection decisions are influenced by the need to assess different players and build a competitive squad for upcoming international assignments.

South Africa will host Kenya at the Orlando Amstel Arena on November 13 before travelling to Nairobi for the return fixture on November 17.

Bafana currently lead Group D after securing victories over Guinea and Eritrea in their opening qualifying matches. They will be looking to maintain their position at the top of the group with positive results against the Harambee Stars.

Sibisi’s omission does not necessarily mean the end of his international career, as he could still return to the squad depending on his performances at club level and future selection decisions.
