Government Set To Procure 100 New Ambulances to Restock National Ambulance Service Fleet
According to a report by TV3 Ghana on November 6, 2026, President John Mahama has announced that the government is procuring 100 new ambulances to restock the fleet of the National Ambulance Service.
The announcement forms part of efforts to strengthen emergency healthcare delivery across the country. The National Ambulance Service plays a critical role in responding to medical emergencies, transporting patients to health facilities, and saving lives. A well-equipped fleet is therefore essential to its effectiveness.
Speaking at an event, President Mahama said the new vehicles will help address the shortage of operational ambulances. “Government is procuring 100 new ambulances to restock the fleet of the National Ambulance Service,” he stated.
In addition to the new purchases, the President disclosed that the Ambulance Service has informed the government that 100 broken-down ambulances can be restored to service if the necessary spare parts are procured. According to him, acquiring these parts would bring a significant number of idle vehicles back into active use at a relatively lower cost than purchasing entirely new ones.
The twin approach of procuring new vehicles while refurbishing existing ones is expected to boost the Service’s capacity to respond swiftly to emergencies, particularly in rural and underserved communities where delays in reaching hospitals can be fatal.
Health advocates and stakeholders have long called for investment in the ambulance system, citing challenges such as vehicle breakdowns, inadequate maintenance, and limited response coverage. The latest announcement is therefore likely to be welcomed by many Ghanaians.
While details on the timeline for delivery, the cost of the procurement, and the distribution of the vehicles were not provided in the report, the President’s statement signals government’s commitment to improving emergency medical services.
Citizens and health professionals will be watching closely to see how quickly the pledge is implemented and whether it translates into improved response times and better patient outcomes nationwide.
