Desist From Charging NHIS Patients Extra Fees – President Mahama Warns Health Facilities
According to a report by UTV Ghana today being Friday, November 6, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama has cautioned health facilities across the country against charging patients additional fees for services covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), insisting that healthcare providers must comply with the approved arrangements.
Mahama believes that such practices undermine the purpose of the NHIS and create unnecessary financial difficulties for patients who depend on the programme to access affordable healthcare.
The National Health Insurance Scheme was established to reduce the financial burden associated with seeking medical treatment and ensure that more Ghanaians can access essential healthcare services without paying the full cost out of their pockets.
However, concerns have continued to emerge over reports of some health facilities demanding additional payments from insured patients before providing certain services or medications.
President Mahama has therefore urged health facilities to desist from imposing unauthorised charges on patients whose treatments are already covered by the insurance programme.
His position reinforces the need for healthcare providers to respect the rights of NHIS members and ensure that beneficiaries receive the services they are entitled to without facing unexpected financial demands.
The warning also places responsibility on the relevant authorities to strengthen monitoring and ensure that facilities found engaging in unauthorised charging practices are appropriately addressed.
For many Ghanaians, the NHIS remains an important source of financial protection, particularly for individuals and families who may struggle to afford medical expenses.
The Presidentβs directive is therefore expected to draw attention to the need for improved accountability within the healthcare system and better protection for insured patients.
