The Historical Record Shows That Nkrumah And Members Of The Big Six Had Different Visions—Bongo

According to a Post on Bongo Ideas official facebook account on Friday,November 6,2026,Ghanaian social commentator Bongo Ideas has endorsed a proposal by the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park to replace the image of the Big Six on selected Ghanaian banknotes with the historic photograph of Dr Kwame Nkrumah declaring Ghana’s independence on March 6, 1957.

In a Facebook post, Bongo Ideas described the proposal as deserving serious consideration, arguing that the historic photograph captures a defining moment in Ghana’s struggle for independence and should receive greater recognition in the country’s national identity.

He revisited the political developments that shaped the independence movement, recalling that Nkrumah broke away from the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) in 1949 following disagreements over the strategy for achieving self-government.

Nkrumah subsequently established the Convention People’s Party (CPP), which adopted a more radical approach and mobilised ordinary Ghanaians behind the demand for immediate self-government.

Bongo Ideas acknowledged that Nkrumah and the other members of the Big Six had different political visions and approaches to the independence struggle. He, however, cautioned against describing the five other members as betrayers, arguing that such characterisations would disregard their contributions to Ghana’s liberation.

He maintained that although several prominent figures played important roles in the independence movement, Nkrumah was the individual who officially declared Ghana’s independence on March 6, 1957.

According to the commentator, that historic moment makes the photograph particularly deserving of consideration for inclusion on Ghana’s banknotes, especially as the country prepares to celebrate its 70th anniversary of independence in 2027.

His endorsement has brought renewed attention to the question of how Ghana’s independence history should be reflected in its national symbols, particularly the images selected for the country’s currency.
