2026 Local Elections Take a Dramatic Turn as First Official Municipality Winner Declared

The African National Congress has won the first municipal council officially declared in South Africa’s 2026 Local Government Elections, providing the party with a key early victory as vote counting continues nationwide. The milestone outcome was recorded in the Northern Cape, where the ANC secured a clear majority in the Renosterberg Local Municipality by winning six of the available 11 seats.

The outcome serves as a welcome boost for the governing party following the local government elections held on November 4. Official tallies show that the Democratic Alliance secured three seats in the council, while the Economic Freedom Fighters and the Patriotic Alliance picked up one seat each. Beyond Renosterberg, early tracking shows the ANC holding leads in several other municipal areas as the Electoral Commission of South Africa works through the official counting process.

At the same time, smaller political forces are carving out notable regional gains. The Patriotic Alliance has made strong inroads across parts of the region, notably establishing an early lead in the Prince Albert municipality. These emerging trends point toward a highly competitive election outcome, particularly in smaller towns and regional councils where coalition governments may become necessary if no single party achieves an absolute majority.

While the ANC’s victory in Renosterberg represents a solid start, election observers note that the broader political picture across South Africa remains fluid. Millions of votes in major urban centers and high-density metros are still being tallied and verified. The Electoral Commission is continuing its updates from the national results center as official declarations come in from remaining voting districts across the country.
