Ghana’s New Airline Plan Reaches Key Stage After Talks With Boeing
Ghana has reached an agreement on a roadmap for establishing a new national airline, with Boeing pledging continued technical support as the government advances plans to restore the country’s presence in the aviation industry.
The development was announced after President John Dramani Mahama met with officials of the Boeing group, which is supporting Ghana’s efforts to establish the airline.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency on Friday, preliminary studies have confirmed the viability of the proposed project. The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss the steps required to move the initiative from planning to implementation.
The agreed roadmap identifies several important stages, including finding a strategic airline partner and a technical partner to support the establishment and operation of the new carrier.
Ghana will also have to secure an Air Operators Certificate, a regulatory requirement for an airline to operate commercially. Other key decisions will involve selecting an appropriate fleet of aircraft and determining how the acquisition will be financed.
Boeing officials assured President Mahama of their continued support throughout the establishment process and the airline’s eventual operations.
The proposed carrier forms part of the government’s broader ambition to strengthen Ghana’s position in regional aviation. The Presidency said the airline would help increase the use of the country’s improved airport facilities and support Mahama’s vision of making Accra the leading aviation hub in West Africa.
Beyond its potential contribution to air transport, the project is also expected to create employment opportunities across several areas of the aviation industry.
The Presidency identified pilots, cabin crew, aeronautical engineers and aviation management specialists among the professionals who could benefit from the anticipated expansion. It said the new airline could generate thousands of jobs.
However, the agreed roadmap represents a series of steps towards establishing the carrier rather than confirmation that operations are about to begin. The search for partners, regulatory certification, aircraft selection and financing arrangements will all be important to the project’s progress.
With Boeing’s technical backing and preliminary studies pointing to viability, the government is now expected to work through the identified requirements as it pursues plans for a new national airline.
