Nairobi CBD Shoppers Adjust Routines Following Carrefour Closure
Carrefour’s closure of its Comet House supermarket in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) has left shoppers who relied on the outlet looking for alternative places to purchase their preferred products.
The branch, located along Monrovia Street, officially closed on October 31, 2026, bringing an end to its four-year operation in the city centre, according to a report by Business Daily published on November 3.
The closure means customers who previously bought groceries, household essentials and personal-care products from the outlet must now visit other supermarkets or Carrefour branches to access the same products.
In a statement, Majid Al Futtaim, the company operating Carrefour in Kenya, said the decision followed a regular review of its operations.
The company did not disclose the specific reasons behind the closure but maintained that Kenya remains an important market for its business.
“Carrefour continues to operate 35 stores across Kenya, and we remain committed to serving our customers and supporting our long-term operations in the country,” the company said. The retailer also confirmed that it was supporting employees affected by the closure through the transition, although it did not reveal the number of workers involved.
Carrefour customers who previously shopped at Comet House can now visit other branches within Nairobi, including outlets at Sarit Centre, The Junction Mall, Two Rivers Mall and Thika Road Mall. The company has also maintained its online shopping services, providing another option for customers seeking its products.
The Comet House branch opened on November 9, 2022, marking Carrefour’s return to Nairobi’s CBD after years of concentrating on shopping malls in the city’s suburbs. At the time, the supermarket stocked more than 9,000 product lines, including fresh produce, groceries, cleaning supplies and personal-care products. Its opening was intended to provide convenient shopping for people working in the city centre who previously had limited access to the retailer’s products.
The closure comes as competition among Kenya’s major supermarket chains continues to intensify.
For shoppers who depended on the Comet House store, however, the closure marks a change in their usual shopping routines.
