Oburu Odinga’s Second Wife Steals Spotlight at Charlene Ruto’s Wedding Over Her Unexpected Outfit
A photograph taken during the arrival of political guests at Charlene Ruto’s wedding in Mwanza, Tanzania, has sparked a heated fashion debate among Kenyans, with Oburu Odinga’s second wife becoming one of the unexpected talking points.
The November 6 wedding brought together several prominent personalities from Kenya and the wider East African region, including President William Ruto, First Lady Rachel Ruto, Cabinet Secretaries, Members of Parliament and other dignitaries.
However, as pictures of the guests arriving at the venue circulated online, attention shifted to a member of the delegation accompanying the Odinga family.
She was spotted on the far left of a photograph taken at the Mwanza airstrip, where the delegation arrived aboard a private plane ahead of the ceremony.
Her choice of clothing immediately attracted reactions, with Kenyans expressing different opinions about whether it was suitable for an occasion of such significance.
She wore a flowing pink and purple tie-dye kaftan-style dress with wide short sleeves that extended to her ankles. She completed the look with black flat shoes, dark sunglasses, a braided hairstyle and a large colourful floral handbag.
Some social media users questioned the outfit, arguing that it appeared too casual for the wedding of the President’s daughter, especially considering the glamorous fashion choices displayed by several other invited guests.
The phrase “Fundi afutwe”, loosely translated as “the tailor should be fired”, featured prominently in the online reactions as critics expressed dissatisfaction with her dressing.
However, other Kenyans came to her defence, arguing that the outfit was decent, comfortable and appropriate for the warm weather in Mwanza.
Some maintained that people should be allowed to dress according to their personal preferences without facing unnecessary criticism. Others questioned why so much attention was being directed at a woman’s clothing choice.
The debate came as several other wedding guests attracted positive attention for their fashion choices.
First Lady Rachel Ruto, Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen’s wife and Tessie Mudavadi were among the personalities whose appearances featured prominently in photographs from the event.
Charlene exchanged vows with her fiancé, Isaya Yunge, in Mwanza on November 6, 2026, following their traditional Kalenjin Koito ceremony held on August 8 at the Ruto family’s Intonna Heritage Farm in Kilgoris.
Although the wedding attracted attention because of its high-profile attendance, the photograph from the Odinga delegation’s arrival demonstrated how even a brief appearance at the ceremony could become a major talking point online.
