Oburu Odinga’s Second Wife Sparks Fashion Debate at Charlene Ruto’s Wedding
Oburu Odinga’s second wife has become the centre of an online fashion debate after her appearance at Charlene Ruto’s white wedding in Mwanza, Tanzania, attracted mixed reactions from Kenyans.
The November 6 ceremony brought together prominent political leaders, government officials and dignitaries, including President William Ruto, First Lady Rachel Ruto and several Cabinet Secretaries. However, a photograph showing the Odinga delegation arriving at the Mwanza airstrip quickly attracted attention, with social media users focusing on the outfit worn by a woman identified online as Oburu’s second wife.
She was dressed in a flowing pink and purple tie-dye kaftan-style dress featuring wide, short sleeves and an ankle-length design. She completed her look with black flat shoes, dark sunglasses, a braided hairstyle and a colourful floral handbag. Her relaxed appearance contrasted with other guests who arrived in more formal outfits, prompting criticism from some online users.
The phrase “Fundi afutwe”, loosely translated as “the tailor should be fired”, became a popular reaction among critics who felt her outfit was unsuitable for such a high-profile wedding. However, others defended her dressing, arguing that the kaftan was comfortable, modest and appropriate for Mwanza’s warm weather. Some also criticised the tendency to scrutinise women’s fashion choices.
Charlene married Isaya Yunge during the colourful ceremony attended by prominent guests. The couple had earlier held their traditional Kalenjin Koito ceremony on August 8, 2026, at the Ruto family’s Intonna Heritage Farm in Kilgoris.
Despite the criticism, the fashion conversation highlighted the intense public attention surrounding the high-profile wedding.
