Bad Omen? Judge Attacked by Dangerous Insects While Sentencing Paul Mackenzie

A courtroom moment nobody expected briefly interrupted one of Kenya’s most closely watched criminal proceedings, leaving those present surprised.

Justice Diana Kavedza was reading the sentence against controversial pastor Paul Mackenzie and his co-accused when a mosquito repeatedly disturbed her, forcing her to pause the proceedings.

The unusual incident happened on Thursday, November 6, as the judge continued delivering her judgment in the Shakahola massacre case.

According to reports, Kavedza stopped reading and apologised to those inside the courtroom, explaining that a mosquito was biting her.

“There is a mosquito biting me, sorry,” she reportedly told those present before attempting to continue with the proceedings.

However, what happened next surprised many. The insect reportedly attacked again shortly afterwards, forcing the judge to interrupt her reading for a second time.

Court staff eventually brought a liquid spray to the bench to help deal with the disturbance. The judge used it beneath the table before resuming the important court proceedings.

Although the interruption was unusual, the case itself carries enormous weight because of the devastating events associated with the Shakahola massacre.

Mackenzie and 27 co-accused were convicted in connection with the deaths of 191 followers whose remains were recovered from Shakahola forest in Kilifi County. Victims included children, and investigators established that followers had been starved as part of an extreme religious practice led by Mackenzie.

The sentencing marked a major moment in a case that drew national and international attention. The interruption did little to lessen the seriousness of the proceedings or the pain associated with the tragedy.

The incident sparked reactions online, with many people talking about the unusual moment during such a serious case. Supporters appeared divided over the attention given to the interruption, while victims and their families remain at the centre of the story.
