Low Academic Qualifications? Bad News for Sifuna as His 2027 Presidential Ambitions Face Scrutiny
Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has cast doubt on Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s ability to mount a strong presidential campaign against President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election, questioning whether he has the political networks and support structures required to compete for the country’s top seat.
Waiguru made the remarks amid growing political realignments ahead of the next election, with Sifuna increasingly positioning himself as one of the vocal critics of the Kenya Kwanza administration.
The governor argued that commanding a large following on social media and attracting huge crowds at political rallies does not necessarily guarantee electoral success, noting that winning an election requires more than public popularity.
She further questioned whether Sifuna could persuade fellow opposition leaders and political allies to rally behind his presidential ambitions, maintaining that a successful campaign requires strong political structures and nationwide mobilisation.
According to Waiguru, President Ruto has already established an extensive political network and gained considerable experience in bringing leaders from different parts of the country together, factors she believes could influence the 2027 presidential contest.
She cited the President’s previous ability to mobilise lawmakers and other political leaders in support of his ambitions, arguing that any presidential contender needs a reliable team and well-organised structures to reach voters across the country.
Waiguru also expressed uncertainty over whether opposition figures, including Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, would eventually agree to support a single presidential candidate.
Her remarks come as Sifuna and other opposition figures intensify efforts to expand the Linda Mwananchi movement and establish a stronger political presence ahead of the 2027 elections.
On October 18, Sifuna dismissed concerns about the movement’s preparedness, maintaining that there was still sufficient time to establish a formidable nationwide political outfit before Kenyans head to the ballot.
The Nairobi Senator has also been urging opposition leaders to overcome their political differences and work together, arguing that unity will be important in their efforts to challenge Ruto in the next election.
Although she questioned Sifuna’s preparedness for the 2027 presidential race, Waiguru acknowledged that the senator could still have a significant political future beyond the upcoming election.
As the country moves closer to the 2027 polls, the ability of presidential aspirants to establish nationwide political networks, mobilise voters and negotiate strategic alliances is expected to remain a key issue in the opposition’s political discussions.
