Good News for Parents and Students as Ministry Announces Major Changes to 2027 School Calendar
The Ministry of Education has announced major changes to Kenya’s 2027 school calendar, extending midterm breaks and adjusting the duration of school terms following widespread unrest that affected learning institutions across the country.
The revised calendar introduces longer February and June half-term breaks, giving learners additional time to rest as the government seeks to address concerns about student welfare and pressure within schools.
Under the new schedule, Term Two will run for 13 weeks instead of the 14 weeks recorded in 2026. Term Three, on the other hand, will be extended from nine to 10 weeks.
The February half-term break will increase from five days to nine days for pre-primary, primary and junior school learners. Students in senior and secondary schools will enjoy a 10-day break.
The June half-term holiday will also be extended to 11 days for primary and junior school learners and 12 days for senior and secondary school students.
According to the ministry’s schedule, the 2027 academic year will begin on January 4, with Term One ending in April. Term Two will start on May 3 and run until July 30, while the third term will begin on August 30.
The changes come after reports of unrest affected 204 schools in 2026, raising concerns about discipline, safety and the general welfare of learners.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba had previously announced plans to review the school calendar to ensure a better distribution of learning time.
The 2027 KCSE examinations are scheduled to begin on November 8 and end on November 26. Learners are expected to resume classes on January 4, 2028.
The revised calendar forms part of broader efforts by the government to improve learning conditions and reduce pressure on students.
Parents, teachers and learners will now have to familiarise themselves with the new dates as schools prepare for the 2027 academic year.
