Bawumia Defends Focus on Digitalisation, Says Global Economy Has Become Digital

Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has defended his strong focus on digitalisation, arguing that the global economy has evolved to the point where digital technology has become central to economic growth and development.

Bawumia made the remarks while responding to criticisms from individuals who believe he has abandoned broader economic discussions in favour of constantly talking about digitalisation.

According to him, critics who make such arguments fail to appreciate the changing nature of the global economy and the growing influence of technology on economic activities.

He explained that digitalisation should not be viewed as a separate subject from economics because modern economic systems increasingly depend on digital platforms, technological innovation and electronic transactions.

The former Vice President maintained that the global economy itself has become digital, making it necessary for countries seeking sustainable growth to invest in technology and embrace digital transformation.

Bawumia’s comments reflect his continued emphasis on digitalisation as a major part of his economic vision for Ghana.

During his tenure as Vice President under the previous NPP administration, he frequently highlighted digital initiatives, including the Ghana Card, mobile money interoperability, digital property addressing and other technology-driven public services.

His supporters have often described these initiatives as important steps towards modernising Ghana’s economy and improving access to public services.

However, his emphasis on digitalisation has also attracted criticism from political opponents and some members of the public who want him to address other economic challenges, including unemployment, inflation, the cost of living and debt management.

By defending his position, Bawumia is seeking to reinforce the argument that digital transformation is not separate from economic policy but an important foundation for future development.

His remarks have once again brought attention to the role technology should play in shaping Ghana’s economic direction.
