Eastleigh building collapse: Mosiria calls for accountability and answers from Sakaja

Former Nairobi County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has called on Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration to explain the progress of investigations into the Eastleigh building collapse, questioning how many people have been rescued, how many have died, and whether anyone has been held accountable.

In a post shared on his Instagram page on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Mosiria said Nairobi residents deserved answers more than a week after the tragedy, arguing that the government should not remain silent while families continue seeking information about their loved ones.

He also questioned what had happened since Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen visited the scene, asking how many people had been arrested, investigated or charged over possible negligence.

“More than a week after the tragic building collapse in Eastleigh, Kenyans are still asking fundamental questions, yet the government has remained largely silent,” he said.

Mosiria further questioned whether comprehensive structural inspections had been carried out on buildings across Nairobi to establish whether they were safe for occupation.

He raised concerns about whether inspections were taking place proactively or whether authorities were waiting for residents to report problems before taking action.

The former county official also expressed concern that powerful interests or financial inducements could interfere with investigations into the collapse. He called for transparency, saying the government should provide clear information if there was no wrongdoing to conceal.

At the same time, Mosiria said genuine developers should be protected from harassment, intimidation and extortion by corrupt individuals within City Hall. He called for a transparent approval and inspection system that would protect both property investors and residents.

“As the incoming Governor of Nairobi, I will not sit back and watch our city being turned into a graveyard. Development must never come at the expense of human life,” he said.

Mosiria has also declared his intention to contest for the Nairobi governorship in the 2027 General Election.

The 18-storey building under construction collapsed along 9th Street in Eastleigh on Friday, October 23, 2026, triggering a multi-agency search and rescue operation.

The National Police Service confirmed on Tuesday, November 3, that a second woman’s body had been recovered from the rubble. Four people had been rescued alive, while the operation continued to establish whether more people were trapped. The recovery followed the discovery of the first body on October 30, eight days after the collapse.

The incident has also prompted investigations into possible breaches of construction regulations and failures in building supervision. The Director of Public Prosecutions directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to investigate possible negligence or misconduct involving public officials, developers and construction professionals connected to the project.

Mosiria’s latest remarks add to calls for answers over the tragedy, with questions now extending beyond the rescue operation to the enforcement of building regulations and the safety of other structures across Nairobi.
