The 3 Powerful Mt Kenya Governors Who Have Officially Left Ruto for Gachagua’s DCP

Political tensions in Kenya’s Mt Kenya region have intensified following the fallout from the October 2024 impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, with several politicians previously aligned with President William Ruto now facing pressure over their political affiliations ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has reportedly gained support in parts of the region, creating new challenges for lawmakers associated with Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

The growing political rivalry has also been accompanied by accusations against government-aligned politicians, with some critics describing them as betraying the interests of the Mt Kenya community. Gachagua’s political messaging has reportedly drawn comparisons with the Mau Mau struggle, portraying some UDA-affiliated leaders as collaborators with the colonial administration.

The reported defeat of UDA’s candidate by DCP’s Kamau Ngotho in the Ol-Kalou by-election has further intensified discussions about the changing political environment. According to the report, Ngotho won by a margin exceeding 30,000 votes.

Several prominent politicians have also been linked to changing political affiliations. Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata, Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha and Nakuru Senator Tabitha Karanja are among those the report identifies as having moved towards DCP.

Other lawmakers are reportedly exploring alternative political platforms. Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has joined the Peoples’ Party of Kenya, while Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina established the Ufanisi Kenya Party. Runyenjes MP Eric Karemba has also announced his departure from UDA, saying he will not seek re-election on its ticket.

However, changing political parties may not automatically resolve the concerns of voters. The report also mentions hostile reactions towards some politicians attempting to associate themselves with the emerging political movement.
