Nnamdi Kanu Was Treated as Though His Conviction Was Already Decided, Lawyers Allege
The legal team representing detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu has accused the Federal High Court in Abuja of denying him fair treatment during his trial, claiming he was handled as though imprisonment had already been decided.
According to the report by Daily Post on November 3, 2026, Lawyer Onyedikachi Ifedi made the allegation on behalf of the Mazi Nnamdi Kanu Defence Consortium while expressing concern that Kanu’s appeal against his conviction has yet to be scheduled for hearing at the Court of Appeal.
The defence team faulted Justice James Omotosho for allegedly refusing to transfer the trial from the 2013 terrorism law to the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, 2022, despite an application requesting the change.
Ifedi argued that Sections 97 and 98(2) of the newer legislation required the transition. He further claimed that applying the 2022 law would have exposed weaknesses in the prosecution’s case.
The lawyer also questioned the legality of the conviction, citing Section 36(12) of the Constitution and the Supreme Court decision in Madukolu v. Nkemdilim.
He maintained that the alleged procedural errors would form a major basis for challenging the judgment on appeal. These remain allegations made by the defence team.
