Ramaphosa: Cabinet to Decide on Mkhwanazi as Hawks Head

President Cyril Ramaphosa has confirmed that KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has been recommended for consideration as the next national head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, better known as the Hawks.

According to Ramaphosa, Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia submitted a memorandum to Cabinet last week, formally placing Mkhwanazi’s name before the executive for consideration.

The position became vacant in May 2025 following the retirement of former Hawks head Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya. Since then, Lieutenant General Siphesihle Nkosi has been serving as the acting head of the specialised crime-fighting unit.

Ramaphosa explained that the appointment process has now moved to Cabinet, where members are expected to deliberate on the recommendation. However, he declined to reveal further details about the discussions, saying an official announcement would follow once Cabinet has reached a decision.

Mkhwanazi became a prominent figure in South African public affairs in July 2025 after making serious allegations about the alleged infiltration of criminal syndicates into the country’s justice system. His revelations contributed to the establishment of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is examining allegations of corruption, criminal activity and misconduct within law enforcement structures.

The possibility of Mkhwanazi taking over the Hawks has also attracted support from organisations such as Forum4SA and ActionSA. ActionSA has described the proposed appointment as a potentially significant step in the fight against organised crime and corruption.

For now, Mkhwanazi’s appointment is not final. Cabinet must first consider the recommendation, with its decision expected to determine who will take permanent charge of the Hawks at national level.
