Naturena Derby Controversy Explodes: Former Referee Hlungwani Reveals Why Pirates’ Goal Was Allowed

Soweto Derby: Hlungwani Breaks Down Appollis Offside Controversy And Makes Surprising Verdict

Former Premier Soccer League referee Victor Hlungwani has weighed in on the controversial refereeing decisions from the latest Soweto Derby, offering an explanation that has reignited debate among Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates supporters.

The highly anticipated encounter ended in a 2-1 victory for Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium, but discussions about the officiating continued long after the final whistle.

One of the biggest talking points involved Pirates winger Oswin Appollis and a goal that was disallowed for an apparent offside infringement. The decision attracted criticism from sections of the football community, with supporters questioning whether the assistant referee and match officials correctly interpreted the situation.

However, Hlungwani believes the goal should have been allowed under the Laws of the Game.

Explaining his assessment, the former referee focused on the positioning of Kaizer Chiefs defender Zitha Kwinika, who was playing a crucial role in determining whether Appollis was in an offside position.

“We have Kwinika there putting Appollis onside. So this goal was scored in line with the FIFA laws of the game. A goal should have been allowed,” Hlungwani explained.

His argument centres on a fundamental principle of the offside rule: an attacking player is not considered offside if an opponent is closer to their own goal line than the attacker at the moment the ball is played, provided the other requirements of the law are satisfied.

In this particular situation, Hlungwani believes Kwinika’s positioning meant Appollis should not have been penalised.

The explanation has added another dimension to the debate surrounding the officiating during the derby, especially because the match carried enormous importance for both clubs.

For Orlando Pirates, the victory provided another opportunity to celebrate bragging rights over their fiercest rivals. For Kaizer Chiefs, however, the defeat was disappointing, particularly after losing their unbeaten record in the Betway Premiership.

The controversy also comes at a time when South African football is facing increased scrutiny over refereeing standards. Calls for improved officiating, greater transparency and the possible introduction of Video Assistant Referee technology have continued to attract attention.

President Cyril Ramaphosa recently discussed the importance of improving football administration during his visit to the PSL headquarters, where refereeing technology and stadium safety were among the issues raised.

Nevertheless, Hlungwani’s explanation highlights why understanding the positioning of every player is essential when assessing offside decisions.

An attacker may appear to be beyond the defensive line from one camera angle, but the position of another defender can completely change the interpretation.

His comments will therefore provide plenty of discussion among supporters who have continued analysing the controversial moment.

While football fans may disagree over individual decisions, the former referee’s assessment offers a technical explanation based on the Laws of the Game.

For the PSL and SAFA, the continued debate is another reminder of the importance of clear communication around refereeing decisions.

The Soweto Derby may have ended on the pitch, but the arguments surrounding its biggest moments are far from over.
