Why Is Bagbin Blocking Cocaine Probe — Minority Fights Back To Expose Ghana-Linked Drug Trafficking

Something is being hidden, and the Minority says they will not keep quiet.

The Minority in Parliament has filed a fresh motion to overturn Speaker Alban Bagbin’s ruling that blocked their request to investigate cocaine and drug trafficking linked to Ghana.

On September 29, 2026, Speaker Bagbin rejected the Minority’s private members’ motion for a bipartisan probe into recent major drug busts. His reason? He said the probe could disturb ongoing criminal cases involving about 21 people in four separate narcotics cases.

But the Minority says that excuse does not hold.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, speaking at a Leaders’ Media Briefing on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, said they have now filed an application for review under Standing Order 127 through First Deputy Minority Whip, Habib Iddrisu.

Their question is simple: If Ghana’s name is being mentioned in international drug busts, why should Parliament be stopped from asking questions?

This is not about interfering with court cases. This is about checking how our institutions failed. How did cocaine pass through Ghana? Who is sleeping on the job at the airport, at the ports, at the borders? Why is Ghana becoming a transit point for drugs?

Afenyo-Markin warns that Ghana risks losing a whole generation to drug abuse if leaders play politics with this matter.

Drug trafficking is not just about police work. It destroys the country’s image, it threatens national security, and it pushes drugs onto our streets for our youth to abuse.

If there is nothing to hide, why block a probe?

The Majority Leader James Agalga says they will meet the Minority squarely if the motion is admitted.

But Ghanaians are watching. When cocaine is mentioned and Ghana is mentioned in the same sentence, Parliament cannot sit down and say “let’s not talk about it.”
