We’ll hit the streets again if our demands are not met – NPP Youth Organiser
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has given the President 14 days to act or face demonstrations in every constituency in the country.
The party’s National Youth Organiser, Abanga Fuseini Yakubu, made the announcement on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen after Tuesday’s demonstration. The NPP organised the protest to demand the removal of Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa over the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa.
Mr Ablakwa has denied any financial impropriety and says the evacuation expenditure is accounted for.
“We want the president to act, that’s why the youth came out in their numbers,” Abanga said.
He dismissed suggestions that participants were brought in from outside Accra.
“No one bussed anyone from other regions to be part of the protest. People came for the love of the party and the country,” he said.
If the party does not hear from the President within the 14 days, the demonstrations will go nationwide.
“We have given the president 14 days. If we don’t hear from him, as Shamima has assured, we will demonstrate in every single constituency,” he said.
The party will also apply for permission to hold another protest.
According to Abanga, what the Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim told the group shows the President is not ready to listen.
“From what Shamima said, we have seen we need to start preparing for the next action, because she has made us aware that the president is not ready to listen to us,” he said.
He added that the turnout went beyond the NPP’s youth wing as members of other political parties and groups such as the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), the People’s National Convention (PNC) and the Liberal Party, as well as national executives of the NPP including First Vice Chairman Kojo Bamba, joined the demonstration, “even though this was a youth wing action.”
