Ghana Risks Losing A Generation To Drug Abuse – Afenyo-Markin
According to a report by JoyNews today being Tuesday, November 3, 2026, the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has raised concerns about the increasing threat of drug abuse among young people in Ghana, warning that the country could lose an entire generation if urgent measures are not taken to address the problem.
Afenyo-Markin expressed worry about the growing impact of substance abuse on the youth, noting that the situation poses a serious threat to the future of the country.
He suggested that the increasing involvement of young people in drug-related activities could have far-reaching consequences for national development if the necessary interventions are not introduced.
According to him, drug abuse is not merely an individual problem but a broader social challenge that requires the collective attention of government institutions, families, educational authorities and other relevant stakeholders.
The Minority Leader’s warning highlights concerns about the effects of substance abuse on the health, education, productivity and general well-being of young people. He believes that allowing the situation to persist could deprive Ghana of the human resources needed to drive its economic and social progress.
Afenyo-Markin’s comments also draw attention to the importance of strengthening public education and awareness campaigns to discourage drug use, particularly among students and young adults.
He further emphasised the need for effective measures to prevent young people from becoming involved in substance abuse, while ensuring that those already struggling with addiction receive the necessary support and rehabilitation.
The warning comes amid growing discussions about the challenges associated with drug abuse and its impact on Ghanaian communities.
His remarks have renewed calls for a coordinated national response involving government agencies, parents, schools, health professionals and civil society organisations.
Afenyo-Markin’s central concern is that failure to confront the problem could have lasting consequences for the country’s younger population and undermine Ghana’s future development.
